Hotel Jerome

The historic Hotel Jerome in Aspen, Colorado, was built in 1889. During the early years of the silver boom, it was the town’s only luxury hotel.

It was also one of the first buildings west of the Mississippi to feature electric lighting. It featured a steam heat system and 15 baths.

After the War, Hotel Jerome was an attractive destination for many famous actors and musicians. In 1947, Walter Paepcke restored the building. He added a third floor and a fourth story to the west wing.

In 1968, John Gilmore bought the Hotel Jerome. He and his partner Jim McManus teamed up to restore the building, adding new guest rooms and steel supports. They donated furnishings from Herschel Bartlett Mansion in St. Louis.
