Uphill skiing is the fastest growing winter sport in the United States. But uphill traffic may be restricted due to avalanche control efforts, snowmaking, or ski area construction. There are generally designated routes on each resort.
Some ski areas offer free uphill access. Other ski areas charge a small fee. It is up to the uphiller to adhere to the policy.
Uphilling is permitted at Aspen Highlands and Snowmass. However, each resort has its own uphill policy.
Aspen Highlands uphilling is allowed from 5am until 10:30pm. The uphill route is normally marked with orange signs. Guests must stay on the sides of the trail. If you plan to uphill, make sure you are dressed in bright, reflective clothing. You must also wear a white headlamp in front and blinking red lights at the back of your pack.
