Summertime is a great time to enjoy the beauty of Huerfano County Colorado. You’ll find a number of activities to enjoy, including natural parks, shopping and more. So, take some time to plan your next vacation.

Outdoor recreation

Huerfano County is a small, southern Colorado county that is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. It is home to three protected wilderness areas and nine Huerfano County State Trust Lands. These landowners have partnered with local government to utilize their scenic open space for recreation.

The county has a number of parks and trails, and the Parks & Trails Advisory Group has partnered with the community to implement after-school programs and other activities.

In recent years, the outdoor recreation industry has experienced exponential growth. Today, there are more options for outdoor recreation in Huerfano County than ever before. This includes a variety of local trails, a multi-generational recreation center, and an extensive set of opportunities for youth.

In addition to the great outdoors, Huerfano County offers a variety of public lands, including Lathrop State Park and nine Huerfano County State Trust lands. During the winter months, Huerfano County offers snowshoeing and cross country skiing along the creek.

Natural beauty

Huerfano County, CO is located in the southern part of the state. It is one of the original seventeen counties that were created when Colorado became a state in 1876. There are some interesting places to visit and activities to do in this area.

The Spanish Peaks Mountains are a popular destination. Here, visitors can enjoy mountain climbing, hiking, and other outdoor recreation. This county is home to three national forests, as well.

Cuchara, CA is a small town in Huerfano County. There are many historic buildings in the city. Among them are the Fox Theater, which was built in 1917, and the Masonic Hall, which was built in 1889.

La Veta, CO is a small town in the Huerfano County. It has a quaint downtown area with historic buildings. There are several places to visit, including the Francisco Fort Museum, which features a working blacksmith forge. You can also take a guided tour of the museum.

Ski resorts

Huerfano County, Colorado is the home of Blanca Peak, the fourth highest summit in the Rocky Mountains. It’s also home to three wilderness areas, including Greenhorn Mountain, and Sangre de Cristo. The county is mostly rural. Aside from the three wilderness areas, there aren’t many tourist attractions.

However, Huerfano County does have a few things to offer the traveling skier. They include a low-cost overnight camping option, and indoor venues for events.

This year, a new, local nonprofit is planning to bring skiing back to Huerfano County. After a decade of dormancy, the former Cuchara Ski Resort could be reopened, and the public may even get to ride the new lifts.

The nonprofit Panadero Ski Corporation (PSC) is planning to restore the main lift, and it’s not out of the question that the main ski lift might be spinning for the public within a few months. While PSC is still working to raise the necessary funds, the nonprofit is confident that it will meet all structural mandates to operate.

Holiday markets

The Huerfano County Colorado holiday markets include a slew of holiday inspired activities. For instance, there are several events in Walsenburg that are part of the Huerfano County 4-H Fair, including a Holiday Craft Fair and a Santa Bazaar. These are not to be missed, and if you’re in the mood for some holiday shopping, there are plenty of local businesses with some of the best gifts around.

Of course, this list would not be complete without a nod to the local Huerfano County GOP. There will be a Christmas party at the Fairgrounds on Tuesday, December 14th at 6pm. If you haven’t yet registered to vote, there is still time. A reminder that ballots must be submitted to the county clerk by 7pm on Tuesday, December 13th.

Lathrop State Park

Huerfano County Colorado summer activities can be found at the Lathrop State Park. This park offers nearly 1,600 acres of recreational land. You can find a wide variety of outdoor activities here, including fishing, wildlife viewing, and hiking. The campground at Lathrop State Park also has 103 campsites and group sites.

The Lathrop State Park is located in the Pinon Mountains. It features two lakes, which provide ample opportunity for swimming, boating, and water skiing. Besides lake recreation, there are hiking trails and a nine-hole golf course.

The park also boasts a wildlife sanctuary and a sand dunes area. Some of the plants found in the park are traditionally used as medicinal herbs. There are also a number of hiking and biking trails. A 12-mile Barlet Trail is ideal for a more challenging hike.
