The Huerfano County Tourism Board calls this area “Southern Colorado’s Spanish Peaks Country.” This mountain-based recreation area is a popular destination for hiking, mountain climbing and hunting.

Lathrop State Park

Located in Huerfano County, Lathrop State Park offers visitors the chance to enjoy an array of activities. From hiking to archery to golfing, this 1,600-acre park has a lot to offer.

One of the most popular activities at Lathrop State Park is bird watching. The park has incredible walking trails that are perfect for spotting these creatures.

Another great activity is to take a hike up into the mountains and look at all of the beautiful scenery that surrounds you. The park is also home to two lakes, Martin and Horseshoe, that are perfect for all kinds of water sports.

The parks also have campgrounds for those who want to stay on site during their visit. The RV sites offer amenities such as picnic areas, fire pits and shower facilities.

Francisco Fort Museum

Located on Francisco Plaza, the Francisco Fort Museum offers a fascinating look at Huerfano County’s past. The museum, which is operated by the Huerfano County Historical Society, showcases artifacts from different eras of history.

Visitors can view weapons, wagons, clothing and a saloon from Old La Veta’s Main Street. A one-room schoolhouse and a blacksmith shop are also on display.

The Francisco Fort Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission is free for children 12 and under and active military.

The Francisco Fort Museum has recently undergone renovations. The museum’s main building in the plaza will soon reopen with a new appearance. The museum has plans to present each room as it would have looked in the early years.

Cuchara Mountain Park

Cuchara Mountain Park offers many activities for tourists, both during the summer and winter months. There’s a cross country ski trail, snowshoeing, and an 18-hole disc golf course.

It’s a popular place to go for hiking, especially for people who want to explore the backcountry. It’s also a great spot for weddings, birthday parties and other types of events.

The park has a newly renovated day lodge, which serves as the base for all of the amenities. It’s located in the town of Cuchara and is surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest.

The park is owned by the Huerfano County government, but a nonprofit is helping to run it on a volunteer basis. This non-profit is focused on developing Cuchara as a year-round attraction that serves locals and visitors alike to build an appreciation for nature.

Huerfano County Fairgrounds

The Huerfano County Fairgrounds offers a variety of activities and attractions. Events include 4-H animal shows, livestock judging, rodeos and more.

The Fairgrounds is also a popular place for locals to get together. It offers a wide variety of food and entertainment, and is a great place to meet with friends.

Several events will be held at the Fairgrounds during the summer. These include a lovefest for non-profits and an evening networking event.

These events are free to SPBA members, but the rest of the public will have to pay a fee. These events are a fun way for locals to learn more about local nonprofit organizations, and it’s also a good opportunity to meet with the community leaders of Huerfano County.

The county has one of the most beautiful and remote wilderness areas in Colorado, known as Greenhorn Mountain Wilderness. The wilderness area may not be as popular as some other Colorado wilderness areas, but it is still a great choice for a quiet hike.
