2. Fort Francisco Museum

The Francisco Fort Museum was built in 1862 and is the last original surviving adobe fort in Colorado. It is a historic site that houses the heirlooms of Huerfano County including locally and nationally important collections of Native American, Spanish settler and pioneer artifacts.

The museum contains nine buildings that include a fort, saloon, one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and hornos (adobe ovens). Inside you can see weapons, wagons and other household items from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s.

There is also a large collection of arrowheads in the museum that are some of the best in the country. Visiting the museum is a must for anyone visiting La Veta.

3. Alys’ Restaurant

George’s is an upscale, casual restaurant that brings regional coastal flair infused with global flavors to Alys Beach. Guests can sit in the airy dining room, on the rooftop viewing deck or on the front porches and screened-in lounges. Visitors are welcome to come inside, leave their name with the hostess and have a drink while they wait to be seated.

Try a delicious rack of lamb, salmon or lamb steak at this restaurant and enjoy the great coffee served here. 4. Parkside Art Gallery & Cafe

The Parkside Art Gallery and Cafe is a great place to visit while in La Veta. It features a variety of artwork by local and nationally renowned artists. It also has a coffee shop where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and some delicious pastries.

The historic building was originally built in 1909 for Peligrino Glassini as the Olympia Saloon. It is one of the oldest sandstone buildings in La Veta. The gallery features wildlife paintings by artist Robert Metropulos and a variety of gift items including note cards.

The Parkside Art Gallery & Cafe is located in the heart of downtown La Veta on Ryus Avenue. It is a great location for hiking, biking and shopping.

5. Deerprint Wine & Bistro

At the bottom of La Veta Pass, in the heart of the Spanish Peaks, lies a historic town center with galleries, shops and restaurants. Visit the re-created Fort Francisco Museum to see original furnishings, tools and more from the town’s past, or stroll through downtown on South Oak Street for shopping, antiques and more.
