Located in Pitkin County, Snowmass Colorado was originally designed to emulate the skiing villages of Europe. It opened in December 1967 with five chairlifts and 50 miles of trails.
In the years since, the resort has expanded to a year-round winter resort with a friendly community within a breathtaking mountain. New terrain parks, hiking and biking possibilities, an alpine coaster and a canopy tour have been added.
Skiing
Snowmass Colorado is one of the largest ski resorts in North America with a wide variety of terrain. The majority of runs are intermediate level, and a full third are double blacks.
The slopes are well suited to family fun. With a large area of easy terrain, kids can play in the snow all day without getting too tired or frustrated.
If you are looking for some more challenging skiing, try Hanging Valley. You can access it by skiing about three-fourths down The Edge and popping into the trees on your right.
Hiking
When the snow melts, visitors to Snowmass can turn their eyes and legs toward a plethora of hiking opportunities. From self-guided wildflower walks to high-alpine treks that take hikers deep into the Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness, there’s something for everyone.
Located within the White River National Forest, Snowmass offers more than 80 miles of trails that leave right from the town. There are big hikes with big views, kid-friendly trails, and plenty of options for those traveling with dogs if you’re staying in pet friendly hotels near Snowmass Village.
