Just a few miles from Aspen, Snowmass Colorado is a year-round resort town with a vibrant lifestyle. In winter it is known for world-class skiing and snowsports, while in summer its pristine alpine environment encourages hiking, mountain biking, fishing, rafting, horseback riding and more.
Snowmass has terrain to suit everyone, with acres of groomed runs, steeps, drops, bowls and chutes, plus three terrain parks that cater to the park shredder. Its single-black trails are also among the best in Colorado.
The History
The village of Snowmass started out as a quiet ranching community, known for its proximity to Aspen. Today, this cozy mountain town is poised to become one of Colorado’s most sought-after, year-round destinations.
A storied mountain community with a rich history, brimming with both working ranches and bucolic estates. Expansive alpine vistas, glimpses of white-tailed deer and bubbling creeks make Old Snowmass the tranquil hamlet that it is.
In the summer, hikers and cyclists flock to the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness area, which encompasses numerous wooded valleys, ponds and lakes. It’s a great place for biking, cross country skiing and horseback riding.
A third-generation Southern California developer, Bill Janss, was instrumental in getting the area off the ground. He was also a ski industry pioneer and a former Olympic-caliber Alpine racer. He was also a big fan of outdoor sports, which led him to develop many of the areas most popular trails and facilities. His passion helped turn Snowmass into a world-class resort.
The Slopes
Snowmass Colorado is the largest of Aspen’s four ski mountains and one of the most diverse ski areas in the region. Offering wide-open cruisers, expert terrain and burly steeps, Snowmass offers something for every skier.
Beginners can start off their journey at Elk Camp Meadows, a learning area with a dedicated chairlift and magic carpet. The slopes in this area are physically siphoned off from the harder runs carrying more experienced visitors, allowing first-timers to progress without the hassle of trying to find green or blue trails elsewhere on the mountain.
Snowmass is an incredibly family-friendly resort, with plenty of activities for kids and lots of après-ski entertainment. You can find a range of bars and restaurants around the village and in Aspen, where everything from al fresco dining to open-air concerts takes place.
