Snowmass Colorado is a renowned winter sport resort in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Its terrain spans over 3,300 acres and boasts nearly 100 trails, terrain parks, and pipes – more than you’ll find at Aspen, Highlands, or Buttermilk!
The resort also has a thriving base village, called Snowmass Village. It’s a popular stop for locals and travelers alike.
Skiing
With its sprawling terrain, uncrowded slopes and world-class ski school, Snowmass Colorado is a favorite with locals and visitors alike. Whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, cross-country or snow tubing, there’s something here for everyone!
With four mountains to choose from, it’s hard not to find a mountain to suit your skill level. Buttermilk and Snowmass are primarily designed for beginners, while Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands offer advanced and expert trails.
The Snowmass Ski Area is the largest of the four mountains in Aspen Snowmass, offering a wide range of terrain and 98 trails. It’s also home to the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster, one of the most thrilling rides in all of the mountains.
A gondola ride up from town takes you to Snowmass Village, which is laid out in the style of European ski towns and offers plenty of dining and shopping. The Sky Cab Gondola (better known as “Skittles” because of its colorful gondola cars) connects these two hubs.
Hiking
Snowmass Colorado is a year-round resort that boasts 80 miles of hiking and biking trails, clear rivers for fishing and rafting and a multitude of stunning vistas. It’s no wonder that hiking in Snowmass Colorado is the most popular outdoor activity for visitors of all ages.
For the best views, head to the Rim Trail which takes hikers high along a ridgeline overlooking Snowmass Village and up to Spiral Point. The yin/yang marble platform at the end is a spectacular spot to soak in views of snow-capped peaks including 13,300-foot Mt. Daly, and it’s a fun trail to explore at your own pace.
Hikers can also take the Maroon Bells Scenic Trail which is one of the most quintessential mountain vistas in the state and the best way to see the iconic Maroon Bells. Alternatively, there’s the Buckskin Pass approach which is a little more strenuous and offers unparalleled views of the surrounding wilderness.
Fishing
Fly fishing is one of the most popular activities in the area. It’s a relaxing way to get out and enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains while reeling in fish.
There are a number of rivers and streams in the area that offer excellent fishing opportunities, including the Roaring Fork River and Frying Pan River. These rivers are known for offering a world-class trout fishing experience.
If you’re new to fly fishing, consider taking a guided trip with a local outfitter. They can provide you with all the gear you need, as well as recommendations for where to wade or float.
Shopping
Snowmass Village offers a wide range of shopping experiences. From grocery stores and on-mountain clinics in the winter to over 20+ bars/restaurants, the town is full of options for both locals and visitors.
For serious shoppers, the Snowmass Village Mall is a great place to shop for ski or snowboard gear and clothing. Christy Sports has Spyder clothing (including kids’ gear) and other outdoor clothing, plus plenty of ski and snowboard accessories.
Alternatively, head over to Grain Fine Food and General Store for an impressive selection of cheeses, charcuterie, chocolates, and more. Next door is the Daly Bottle Shop, which has more than 450 wines and beers.
In addition to its excellent dining and shopping opportunities, Snowmass is home to some of the most amazing mountain scenery in the country. With four mountains to ski and ride, as well as hiking and biking trails, water activities, and a variety of off-the-grid adventure options, this is the ultimate Colorado mountain getaway.
Dining
Whether you’re looking for a casual dining experience or a finer affair, Snowmass has many great options. From pubs to taverns, to diners with classic American sandwiches and burgers, you’re sure to find something you enjoy.
Skiers can also enjoy a quick bite in the cafes located at various resorts throughout Snowmass Village. Fuel is one of the best places for coffee in town and they have a fantastic breakfast menu that’s perfect if you’re craving an Egg Sandwich after a day of skiing!
The Stew Pot is a popular local spot that serves up delicious vegetarian chili for lunch. If you’re in the mood for a full sandwich, try The Pilgrim, which is made with Turkey, lettuce, tomato, and mayo on multigrain bread.
