Snowmass Colorado is a popular mountain destination for skiers and snowboarders, but there’s also tons of exciting activities for non-skiers. From yoga to swimming to dog sledding, there’s something for everyone.
One of the most memorable experiences at Snowmass is a dog sled tour. Guided by an experienced musher and 8-10 Alaskan huskies, you’ll explore the backcountry in style.
Dogsled Tours
A Dogsled Tour is a fantastic winter activity that will have you seeing Snowmass Colorado from a different perspective! You’ll be able to take a sled pulled by 8 – 10 Alaskan Husky dogs and speed through the pristine wilderness.
There are two types of tours available; group or tag sleds. The group tour has up to 6 adults in a group and they switch between driving the sled and riding, while the tag sled has one person driving the sled and one person riding on the second dogsled.
If you want to be alone, or if you’re a large group of people, you can opt for a Private Group Tour. This option allows you to book the entire tour and you will have the guide with you helping you control the dogs and the sled.
Krabloonik has been a part of the Snowmass scene since 1976, when Dan MacEachen opened the operation after receiving county approval in 1974. It was known for its restaurant’s game menu and sled-dog rides pulled by Alaskan huskies under a musher’s guidance.
Snow Tubes
While world-class skiing is the name of the game, Snowmass Colorado also offers a variety of other fun winter activities. One of the most popular is snow tubing.
It’s a great way to have fun in the snow while you and your family are at the mountain. Plus, it’s a great way for kids to get a bit of exercise during their holiday vacation!
Snowmass’s tubing hill is located on-mountain at Snowmass Village. It has multiple lanes to enjoy and a magic carpet that will take you back to the top of the hill for more rides!
This multi-lane hill is open from mid-December through early April. It’s free for children under 36 inches tall to enjoy. It’s a great way to experience a Colorado snow adventure with your whole family.
Snowmobiling
Snowmobiling in Colorado is a fun, family-friendly winter activity. You can rent a snowmobile and take it out on your own or book a tour with a local snowmobiling guide.
As the largest of Aspen’s four ski mountains, Snowmass boasts big, challenging terrain for all ages and ability levels. There are family-friendly slopes, mellow beginner terrain and wide-open groomed cruisers for intermediates.
There are also plenty of steep, inviting glades and double-black runs for the more advanced riders. It’s no surprise Snowmass is a popular destination for snowmobiling in Colorado.
For a truly unique experience, book a guided snowmobile tour that takes you off the resort’s slopes to view the Maroon Bells or explore T-Lazy-7’s winter backcountry. Tours range from two to four hours, with a lunch included.
The Maroon Bells
The Maroon Bells are one of the most iconic mountain peaks in Colorado. They captivate travelers and hikers alike with their stunning mountain views and pristine, mirror-like lake.
These mountains were sculpted over 300 million years by wind, water and erosion. The Bells are now protected within the Maroon Bells–Snowmass Wilderness of White River National Forest.
You can enjoy the natural wonders of The Maroon Bells via hiking, camping and biking trails. There are six pet-friendly trails of varying lengths that take you to fields of vibrant wildflowers, quaint lakes and pristine aspen forests.
You can also climb the iconic Pyramid Peak or backpack the Four Pass Loop, a 26-mile route that traverses Alpine lakes, rocky peaks and meadows. If you want to do it all, make sure you book a permit before you head out into this popular region!
