In the late 1870s, a railroad was built to haul gold ore from the San Juan Mountains. Since then, the line has continued to operate between the cities of Durango and Silverton.
The line is one of only a few in the United States that still use steam locomotives. A flood in 1970 destroyed five miles of the Silverton line.
