The History of Angel Fire

The village of Angel Fire New Mexico, located on the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway, is a popular destination for skiers with over 500 acres (2.0 km2) of slopes. The community experiences cold winter temperatures and mild summers, allowing visitors to enjoy the outdoors and experience the region’s unique culture.

Legend has it that long ago, the Moache Utes were saved from a disastrous lightning fire by shifting winds during a rainstorm. They began calling the 11,060-foot peak “Breath of Spirits,” a name incoming Franciscans Christianized into Angel Fire.

Today Angel Fire Resort bustles with families buckling into ski boots and looping tethers around tots for their first time on the slopes. During the winter season, the mountain provides downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, ice fishing, and more.

In the summer, Angel Fire Resort offers golfing, tennis, hiking, biking, swimming, boating, horseback riding, and more. The village also hosts several festivals throughout the year.

Angel Fire Ski Resort

Located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico, Angel Fire Ski Resort is a popular ski destination for those looking to experience snow sports in the area. With over 560 acres of skiable terrain, 81 trails serviced by 7 lifts and a vertical drop of more than 2,000 feet, Angel Fire Resort offers plenty of opportunity for downhill skiing and snowboarding.

The ski season at Angel Fire typically runs from December to March. It receives an average of 200 inches of snowfall during the winter.

Angel Fire Golf Course

Located in the heart of Angel Fire, this PGA-rated 18-hole golf course is a par-72 course that offers challenging play while offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain ranges and forests. The course also boasts a number of features including a golf shop, on-site PGA pro, a modern fitness center and more.

The front nine is a longer-playing layout that meanders through two unspoiled canyons while the back nine features links-style golf with smaller greens, plenty of bunkers and a signature hole featuring a tee box soaring 200 vertical feet above the green – 250 yards away.

The resort is home to a variety of lodging options from luxury hotel rooms and suites to premium RV sites, condominiums, and vacation homes. Guests will love the resort’s signature golf courses and the array of activities available to them, like skiing (number one in New Mexico), tubing, sledding, hiking, mountain biking, disc golf, zip lines, tennis, dining and more.

Angel Fire Mountain Adventure Center

The Angel Fire Mountain Adventure Center offers one of the highest-altitude, adrenaline-inducing outdoor adventures in New Mexico. The mountain’s Zipline Adventure Tour, opening May 20 (weather permitting), takes small groups of thrill seekers through multiple stages at the second-highest elevation zipline tour in the US.

It’s also a great option for those looking to get their kids excited about the outdoors. The Nordic Center, outside the resort’s Country Club, features 15km of well-groomed trails for both skate and classic skiing.

For snow tubing, the Polar Coaster is an exciting three-lane tubing hill with a conveyor belt to take you back up. It’s only for kids who are 42 inches tall or taller, though.

Angel Fire also has a full-service Nordic center, with 15km of groomed trails for both skate and classic skiing right at the resort’s golf center. There’s also a terrain park and a sledding hill.
