Winter Activities in Taos
There are plenty of things to do and see in the winter that don’t involve snow and skis! Take a horseback ride or a llama trek, go on a hot air balloon flight, visit the Taos Pueblo or just enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains and Sangre de Cristo peaks.
Known for its expert terrain, Taos Ski Valley is a popular destination for both skiers and snowboarders. But the resort also offers a wide range of trails and runs for intermediates and beginners as well, making it a great choice for family trips or romantic escapes in the New Mexico mountains.
Challenge & Charm
When Ernie Blake chose to build Taos Ski Valley about thirty minutes from the town of Taos, most people thought he was crazy. But the founder of the area made good on his dream, building some of the steepest and most challenging skiing in North America. The resort’s fall-line groomers are legendary and include hair-raising chutes for a challenge you won’t soon forget.
The legend continues with a slew of Freeride World Tour competitions on the Taos slopes. These races draw some of the world’s best extreme skiers and riders and showcase some of the best skiing and riding in the country.
New for this season is a high-speed quad that replaces Chairs 1 and 5 to cut ride times by about five minutes. This makes it easier to get to the infamous Kachina Peak.
Local Flavor – Taos is a true destination in every sense of the word, so there’s no shortage of places to dine and shop while you’re away from the slopes. You’ll find New Mexican cuisine that includes both red and green chile sauces, as well as local art, jewelry, pottery, and Native American crafts.
Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot to eat or want to check out the many galleries and shops, there’s something for everyone in this beautiful mountain town. You can also explore the UNESCO-designated Taos Pueblo, the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the US, and visit the Taos Museum.
If you’re looking for a fun way to pass the time between sessions on the slopes, don’t miss out on the Eis Haus ice skating rink in the newly renovated plaza. This large rink is open from afternoons through the evening and features large built-in fireplaces for a comfortable atmosphere to unwind and warm up.
You’ll also find a number of outdoor sports to keep you busy during your time in Taos, including mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking, fishing, and meditation. Or, for a unique way to experience the mountains, why not try a snowshoeing adventure?
